GUNi at International University Impact Forum: Climate Action 2024

Last week, global university leaders, policymakers, and industry trailblazers convened in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the THE University Impact Forum: Climate Action 2024. The forum, organized by Times Higher Education (THE) in partnership with local institutions, brought together thought leaders to assess the critical role of universities in addressing climate change and sustainability.

As Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29, the forum emphasized the need for universities to take a proactive stance in combating the environmental crisis. Delegates focused on how climate change is reshaping lives worldwide and how to prepare students and future generations for its impacts.

Throughout the event, GUNi took part in panel discussions that addressed urgent questions such as: “Why is the current climate action agenda failing all of us?” and “How should universities address the inequities within the climate action agenda?” Josep M. Vilalta, Director of GUNi, provided perspectives on how higher education institutions can support governments and unite diverse actors to achieve global climate targets.

GUNi also participated in the closing panel, which explored the question: “How can universities bolster the uptake of green skills and jobs?” As the global economy transitions towards sustainability, higher education institutions play a pivotal role in equipping students, and society, with the green skills needed for emerging industries.

Participants also engaged in bespoke data masterclasses focused on SDG 13 (Climate Action), where they gained first-hand insights into advancing research outcomes and expanding climate-related initiatives.

The forum provided a collaborative platform for university leaders to share best practices and strengthen their networks, furthering their commitment to driving meaningful climate action on a global scale.
